Saving: no Save button, typing in the line tables

Edit dialogs and record forms save as you type; on estimates, invoices, POs and RFQs you can type straight into the line table, like a spreadsheet.

Step by step

  1. Edit dialogs and record forms save by themselves about a second and a half after you stop typing, and right away when you leave a field. The header (or the bar under the form) shows Saving… and then Saved with the time. Done closes the dialog; Undo my changes puts back what was there when you opened it.
  2. This works on estimates, invoices, purchase orders and RFQs, and on change orders, service agreements, backcharges, bids, customers, client equipment, daily logs, permits and inspections, punch items, RFIs, submittals, subcontracts, scope packages, GC bids and bid packages, sequences of operation, meeting minutes, safety incidents, prevailing wage schedules, certified payrolls, filled-in forms and letter templates.
  3. Some records only save as you type while they are still being worked on — a draft estimate, invoice, PO, RFQ, subcontract, submittal or scope package, a pending change order, an open RFI, minutes that are not final, a form not yet submitted. Once the record is sent, approved or closed, its dialog keeps a Save button.
  4. On an estimate, invoice, PO or RFQ you can type straight into the line table: click a description, quantity, price, hours or markup and type. Enter or ↓ saves and goes to the same column one row down, ↑ one row up, Tab to the next cell, Esc puts the old value back. Each cell is saved on its own — the other fields of the line stay as they are. $ and commas are fine in money cells.
  5. The same keys work in the lists of fields: a change order’s line items, a sub change order’s lines (the draft saves as you type), the line items a sub prices on a bid package and a GC package’s scope sheet (both save as you type), and the quantity, material and hours cells of a takeoff review. Enter or ↓ goes to the same field one line down, ↑ one up, Esc puts back what the field held; in a line item’s text Shift+Enter starts a new line.
  6. Adding a line still needs a click on Add (or Enter in the quick-add row) — a half-typed line is never saved by itself. An AI draft of a scope sheet is not saved by itself either: look it over, then click Save scope sheet.

Tips

  • If someone else changes the same record or line while you are editing, nothing is overwritten: a dialog lets you pick Keep mine or Discard mine, and a cell shows a message and the line as they saved it — type your change again.
  • A change that could not be saved (no connection, signed out, the tab closed) stays in this browser. The record’s page then shows “Changes kept in this browser that were not saved” with Restore and Discard.
  • Team member details (SSN, date of birth) and a few screens that send something on every save still use a Save button on purpose.
